from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Symphonie espagnole op. 21 is a work by the French composer Édouard Lalo for violin and orchestra in D minor .

General

Although the piece is called a symphony , it is actually a violin concerto . It is by far Lalo's most famous work.

The concert is dedicated to Pablo Sarasate and was premiered by him in Paris in 1875 .

Tchaikovsky's pupil Josef Kotek played the piece for him in Clarens in March 1878 . This inspired Tchaikovsky to write his Violin Concerto in D major .

To the music

The work consists of five movements :

  1. Allegro non troppo
  2. Scherzando: Allegro molto
  3. Intermezzo: Allegretto non troppo
  4. Andante
  5. Rondo: Allegro

Although the piece does not have any concrete Spanish elements, it has rhythmic, dance-like and virtuoso characteristics that make the work sound typically Spanish to the listener.
