The Polish Synagogue in Danzig was built in 1844 in the then West Prussian city.

history

After a previous building burned down between 1838 and 1844, the outwardly simple synagogue was built in Mattenbuden (street, today ul. Szopy ) in Gdansk Niederstadt east of the Speicherinsel . Their furnishings are said to have been magnificent and in an oriental style. It offered space for 1000 people.

As an Orthodox synagogue, it was called the Polish one. That is why it continued to exist after the opening of the great Danzig Synagogue (1887).

Already in autumn 1937 there were pogrom-like riots against Jewish traders in the Free State , in which the NSDAP ruled with an absolute majority. During the November pogrom in 1938 the synagogue was burned down and demolished in 1939/1940.
