Synagogue (Güstrow)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The synagogue in Güstrow was probably the second synagogue building in the city of Güstrow in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . The first synagogue is said to have been destroyed in connection with the Sternberg process of abusing the host and replaced by a chapel. After it was destroyed by fire, the Franciscan monastery was built at this location , and the first synagogue was therefore located in today's cloister courtyard . The second synagogue building was inaugurated on September 28, 1829 after Mecklenburg had been settled by Jews again towards the end of the 18th century and the services in Güstrow were initially held in private rooms. The synagogue was built in the classicism style and was located in a garden open to the street. On November 9, 1938, during the Reichspogromnacht , the synagogue and the funeral chapel in the Jewish cemetery were destroyed by arson, and the cemetery itself was desecrated. The Jewish community center has been preserved.
