Synagogue in Groebzig

The Synagogue Gröbzig is a former synagogue and today's museum in Gröbzig , a place in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district in Saxony-Anhalt .

history

There was evidence of an active Jewish community in Gröbzig from the beginning of the 18th century. In the second half of the 18th century, the construction of the synagogue began in the village. Around 1809 to 1811, the cemetery at the synagogue, originally laid out in 1670, was expanded. In 1832 the parish hall followed, which was also known as the Old Jewish School and was used until 1858. The school was closed as early as 1842, as all schools were combined to form a general city school. In 1858 the synagogue was further rebuilt. An entrance was created from the women's gallery and the grille to the main prayer room was removed. In addition, the synagogue received a new pulpit and new benches. The old Jewish school fell victim to the demolition and rebuilding of the coach house that same year . A new school was built elsewhere.

From 1871, the number of members of the local Jewish community decreased significantly, which is why the city's synagogue was handed over to the city for museum use in 1934. It housed the local history collection in the building. It is believed these terms have the facility before the destruction of Kristallnacht in 1938 by the Nazis protected. However, this could not protect the remaining members of the Jewish community from the deportation carried out between 1938 and 1940 .

During the GDR era, the building's appearance was changed a lot. So it got smooth plaster and white walls. The paintings from 1858 were also painted over. It was not until 1984 that the restoration and return to the old state began. The reopening as Museum Synagoge Gröbzig, exhibition Gröbziger Heimathistorie and Jewish History, took place on November 3rd, 1988. Since 1996 the synagogue has belonged to the Museum of Jewish Cultural History in Central Germany.

The building ensemble is now registered as a cultural monument under registration number 094 09378.
