Memorial at the site of the synagogue

The synagogue in Hörde , a district of Dortmund in North Rhine-Westphalia , was built in 1898/99. It stood on Victoriastraße, today's Semerteichstraße, on the southern side of the Rathausplatz (today Friedrich-Ebert-Platz).

precursor

A prayer room in a private house in Hörde was first mentioned in 1777. Around 1780/1790 nine Jewish families lived in the village. In 1818, the Jewish community acquired a house on the corner of Lange Strasse (today Alfred-Trappen-Strasse) and Goldstrasse, which from then on was used as a synagogue. In the 19th century, there was a Jewish immigration mainly from Russia. Until around 1910, the synagogue district of Hörde also included the Jewish families from Aplerbeck , Barop , Brackel , Berghofen , Kirchhörde and Sölde .

New building

In 1898/99 the community had the new synagogue built due to lack of space. In January 1900 the Cologne rabbi Abraham Frank inaugurated the synagogue ; In 1929 it was extensively renovated and the interior was decorated with paintings.

During the November pogrom in 1938 , SA men set the building on fire. The ruins were removed a few months later.

Commemoration

In addition to a memorial plaque that was attached in 1982, a steel stele with the following inscription stands at the site of the synagogue : “Jews have lived with us for centuries. Their synagogue was near this place. From 1933–1945 they were degraded, expelled, deported and murdered in our country, simply because they were Jews. We must never allow this to happen again! "
