Synagogue (Kandava)

Former synagogue in Kandava (2008)

The synagogue in Kandava , a city in western Latvia , was built in 1880 and renovated in 1937.

With the attack on the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941, the entire territory of Latvia came under the control of National Socialist Germany until July 8, 1941. This began the annihilation of almost all of the local Jewish population.

After the Second World War , the synagogue building was used as a warehouse and was converted into a cinema in the 1950s , which was closed years ago.

On the street-side facade, the arched windows and the two portals , which are framed by pilasters , remind of the building's former use as a synagogue.
