Mäkiaho started his career as a Nordic combined athlete in January 2013 in the Continental Cup and just two weeks later got a lot of attention at the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2013 with a thirteenth place in the 10 km Gundersen run. In the further course of the Continental Cup season, however, he no longer achieved any outstanding placings. From 2014 to 2016 he alternately competed in the Continental Cup and the World Cup and achieved his best placement in the Continental Cup race in Ramsau am Dachstein, where he finished sixth overall in the 10 km Gundersen run in February 2016. Other good results were two fourth places in the team pursuit with the team at the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2014 in Val di Fiemme and the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2015 in Almaty .
First world cup points and junior world championship title
Mäkiaho at the World Cup in Ramsau am Dachstein 2016
The 2016/17 season earned him a permanent place in the Finnish World Cup team. He justified this nomination at the opening competition in Lillehammer , where he achieved a very good fourth place overall in the 4 × 5 km relay together with Ilkka Herola , Eero Hirvonen and Leevi Mutru . In the two individual races over 10 km to Gundersen in Ramsau am Dachstein in December 2016, he was able to stabilize his performance and landed in the points both times. In February 2017 Mäkiaho again took part in the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in Park City . He was junior world champion in the Gundersen singles over 10 km, whereas he narrowly missed the title in the sprint as second. He finished fourth with the team. A few weeks later he was nominated for the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti , but was only used in the Gundersen competition on the normal hill, in which he reached 38th place.
An integral part of the World Cup team
In winter 2017/18 was Mäkiaho integral part of Finland's World Cup team. Right on the first competition weekend at the end of November 2017, he reached the top 10 in the individual for the first time with tenth place in Ruka . In the following weeks he regularly won World Cup points and also achieved success with the team. Together with Leevi Mutru , Ilkka Herola and Eero Hirvonen he achieved third place in Chaux-Neuve . At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , he took 38th place on the large hill and 36th place on the normal hill. In the 2018/19 World Cup season , Mäkiaho repeatedly had difficulties reaching the points. Nevertheless, he was one of the best Finns, so that he was registered as a participant in the Nordic World Ski Championships 2019 in Seefeld in Tyrol . Together with Mutru, Herola and Hirvonen, he finished fifth in the team competition.
