Former synagogue in Wetter

The synagogue in Wetter , a small town in the Marburg-Biedenkopf district in central Hesse , was built in 1896/97. The secular synagogue with the address Auf dem Wasserloch 45 is a protected cultural monument .

history

The two-storey square half-timbered building with a polygonal roof turret was inaugurated on September 10, 1897. The teacher's apartment was originally on the ground floor and the classroom above.

time of the nationalsocialism

The interior of the synagogue was destroyed during the November pogrom in 1938 . The building escaped complete destruction due to the close proximity to the residential area, which would have been damaged in a fire.

Todays use

After 1945 the synagogue building served as a storage room, stable and warehouse. In order to keep the now run down building in the long term, the roofing in slate was renewed in the mid-1980s . In 2000, the synagogue became the property of the city and it was extensively renovated. Today the building is used as the “House of Remembrance” under the direction of the sponsoring and support association for exhibitions and readings.
