Synagogue (Padua)
The synagogue in Padua , the capital of the Italian province of Padua in the Veneto region , was built in 1584. The synagogue is located at 9 Via San Martino.
The synagogue was closed in 1892 after a new synagogue was built. Since it was destroyed by fire by the German occupation during World War II , the old synagogue had to be used as a place of worship again.
The baroque synagogue has a floor area of 18 by 7 meters. The Torah shrine dates from the 17th century. It is framed by four columns and is richly decorated. The wooden bimah can be reached by stairs on both sides. It is vaulted by an octagonal canopy that rests on pillars.
