The former synagogue in the Taunus town of Idstein in Hesse at Felix-Lahnstein-Straße 1 is a listed half-timbered house . The building now houses a restaurant and several apartments. As an eaves-standing, plastered half-timbered building with a covered courtyard gate, it does not differ from the neighboring arable houses.

history

In 1789, the local Jewish community applied to the authorities to purchase a house to be converted into a synagogue. The application was rejected on the grounds that they did not want to contribute to "the increase in the number of Jews that has been going on for some time."

In 1793 the community received approval to build the synagogue. This was then also known as the “Judenschule”, which is related to the usual teaching of Jewish children.

The building was rebuilt and renovated several times, including extensive in the years 1875 (with partly new construction) and 1935. The prayer room on the upper floor had 40 places for men and 18 for women. The women's compartment was slightly higher than the men's compartment. A mikveh is said to have been in the house. The building also served as a teacher's apartment.

During the November pogrom in 1938, the synagogue was devastated, the inventory and furniture destroyed. In December 1938 the building passed into non-Jewish ownership. The buyer operated a grist mill in the courtyard and had the synagogue converted into a residential building.

Since 1945 the building has been used as an apartment building. A plaque on a neighboring building commemorates Felix Lahnstein, the last Jewish community leader, and the former synagogue. Felix-Lahnstein-Straße has had this name since 1945. Until 1934 it was called Judengasse , from 1934 to 1945 it was called Hintere Borngasse . Attempts by the city of Idstein to buy the house in need of renovation have so far failed.
