Former synagogue

The former village synagogue in Padberg was built in the 18th century. It served as a synagogue until 1932, when it was sold and converted. In this way she escaped the November pogroms in 1938 . Today the listed building serves as a memorial. It is said to be the oldest surviving half-timbered synagogue in Westphalia.

Building description

The synagogue is located on Padberg's Old Market. The building is a small half-timbered house with a size of 6.30 × 7.50 m. The floor plan is rectangular, the gable roof was originally a half-hip roof. The west gable is roughly boarded up. The building is the only surviving half-timbered synagogue in North Rhine-Westphalia.

history

The first Jewish residents were mentioned in Padberg around 1672. A first letter of protection dates from 1723. Despite a relatively small Jewish community , a synagogue was first mentioned in documents in 1751. In 1847 the synagogue district of Padberg was founded.

Because of the sharp decline in the number of parishioners, the synagogue was profaned in 1932 . The building was sold and served as a workshop. For this reason, the building escaped the destruction of the November pogroms.

Today the building is owned by the city of Marsberg . For a long time there was a local political dispute about the future of the building. Eventually the synagogue was restored and the changes of the last few decades were eliminated as far as possible. The women's gallery, the staircase, the proportions of the windows and the color scheme of the interior were reconstructed on the basis of residual findings. In 1999 it was re-inaugurated as a “memorial for tolerance and understanding”. The former synagogue also contains an exhibition on local Jewish history.
