Brakel synagogue district

The Brakel synagogue district , based in Brakel , today a town in the Höxter district in North Rhine-Westphalia , was created according to the Prussian Jewish Law of 1847 .

In addition to Brakel, Erkeln and Riesel also belonged to the synagogue district founded in 1856/57 . At that time, the Jewish community of Brakel comprised 171 members, and in 1858 there were 16 Jews in Riesel. The number of Jews in Erkeln is given as 15 for 1843 and 12 for 1871. The synagogue community had been chaired by the farmer Naphtali Nordheim since 1854, and the statutes of 1856 were signed by W. Stern, L. Heineberg and S. Scheideberg as deputy heads.
