Synfig is an open source 2D vector graphics and animation program that was originally developed as proprietary software by Robert Quattlebaum . It was to become the main tool of the Voria Studios , which he founded . Since the customers stayed away, however, it was placed under the GPL after the demise of Voria Studios in 2005 .

The aim of the developers was to write a program with which one can produce animated films ready for a feature film with less staff and resources. The program offers an alternative to manual tweening so that the animator does not have to draw every single frame of a film.

Input / output formats

Synfig uses its own XML- based file format (SIF or packed as SIFz) that contains vector data and references to external graphics. In addition to various video formats such as DV , Theora and MPEG , the animations can also be saved as a sequence of individual images such as PNG , OpenEXR , BMP or as animated graphics such as MNG and GIF .

With the help of external conversion programs it is possible to transfer SVG graphics and images from the graphics program GIMP with layers.
