Synthesia (formerly Piano Hero ) is a keyboard - computer simulation for the operating systems Microsoft Windows and Mac OS , as well as in mobile devices for Android and IOS . It enables the user to play with a special keyboard that can be connected to the computer or with the keyboard according to certain on-screen instructions that are displayed on a virtual keyboard with corresponding bars. The concept can therefore also be compared to games like Guitar Hero or Keyboard Mania. Each song is called up via an associated MIDI file. The software was open source until May 2012 and was under the MIT license . The source code of the last version (version 0.6.1b) can be downloaded from SourceForge .

Functions

Synthesia makes it possible to use user-defined MIDI files and to help the user play the keyboard, thereby saving or simplifying the learning of notes. After the play is over, the player will be rated with a score that they can share with others online. There are also special learning and training packages.

history

The program was developed by Nicholas Piegdon in 2006. Originally called Piano Hero, the program had to be renamed due to a lawsuit filed by Activision over similarities with Guitar Hero's gameplay . Due to several donations, a version for Mac OS was released in early 2007 in addition to the Windows version. After May 2012, Piegdon decided to stop operating the software as open source because he saw commercial potential in it. The software was continued in a proprietary manner and offered a basic version that was free of charge. Additional functions had to be activated with a special key that was to be purchased. Since December 2014, with the exception of Demo-MIDIS, the program is no longer available free of charge from the provider. A version for iOS followed in December 2012 and for Android in December 2014.

Trivia

On video portals such as YouTube , keyboard versions or tutorials of songs , theme songs and other musical works are often realized with Synthesia by recording the course of the game.
