System Center Virtual Machine Manager

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) is part of Microsoft's System Center suite of management and reporting tools for virtual machines, alongside established tools such as System Center Operations Manager and System Center Configuration Manager . SCVMM is designed to manage a large number of virtual servers based on Microsoft Virtual Server and Hyper-V and was released for corporate customers in October 2007. SCVMM 2019 is recommended for a maximum of 1,000 physical host computers that are home to up to 25,000 virtual machines in up to 2,000 virtual networks .

A stand-alone version for small and medium-sized business customers is available.

history

Microsoft System Center 2016 Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) was released in September 2016. This product enables the provision and management of a virtualized, software-defined data center with a solution for network, storage, data processing and security.

The current version is System Center 2019 Virtual Machine Manager, which was released in March 2019. It offers new functions in the areas of integration, data processing, networking, security and storage.

Functions

The functions of the SCVMM 2019 include the areas of data center , virtualization hosts, network , storage and library resources . The data center functions are a management interface for virtualization servers, network components and storage resources.

A VMM library is a file share that contains a catalog of resources that is used to provide virtual machines and services. A distinction is made here between file-based resources such as virtual hard disks , drivers , application packages and non-file-based resources such as templates.

The SCVMM also manages local and remote storage, which only supports block storage based on Fiber Channel, iSCSI and Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) or Storage Area Networks (SAN).

In the networking area, the VMM enables network resources to be added to the SCVMM fabric, with network locations that administrators define through IP subnets, virtual LANs ( VLAN ), logical switches , static IP addresses and MAC pools. SCVMM also provides network virtualization, including support for creating and managing virtual networks and network gateways. Through network virtualization, SCVMM can, for example, provide multiple clients, isolated with their own networks and IP address ranges for increased data protection and security. Virtual gateways allow virtual machines in virtual networks to connect to the physical networks in the same location or in different locations.

The SCVMM 2019 also has the ability to manage VMware ESX / ESXi 5.1 to 6.5 servers in a VMM fabric . The migration of VMware machines to Hyper-V VMs is supported, unless the machine configured in VMware is internally based on a virtualized EIDE bus.
