System for Wireless Infotainment Forwarding and Teledistribution

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

System for Wireless Infotainment Forwarding and Teledistribution ( SWIFT ) describes a system for the transmission of text and graphic information in VHF radio . Similar to the Radio Data System , with SWIFT the data transmission takes place in parallel to the normal radio program , the broadcast is tied to the respective radio station. Technically, the system is the European version of the DARC ( Data Radio Channel ) system used in Japan .

distribution

After a two-year pilot phase, the service was presented to the public at IFA 1999 as a “radio for reading” and initially only offered by the Saxon radio PSR . The "Textman" was also presented at IFA 99, a portable, battery-operated radio with SWIFT receiver from Sony (price at the time: around 300 DM). Although numerous other radio stations wanted to offer the service at the time, it was not widely used. In the meantime, Radio PSR has also discontinued SWIFT operations.

Comparison with radio text

In contrast to the widespread radio text , graphics and more extensive texts can also be transmitted with SWIFT. The information is divided into pages and can be temporarily stored in the recipient. In this way, SWIFT is more similar to the teletext used in television .
