The Széchenyi Prize ( Hungarian Széchenyi díj ) is the highest state award in Hungary in the fields of science and research . It is named after the Hungarian state reformer István Széchenyi (1791–1860).

history

Since 1948, the Kossuth Prize (Hungarian Kossuth-díj ) has been awarded annually as the highest state award for science, literature and culture . From 1963 the science division was spun off from the Kossuth Prize and the State Prize of the Hungarian People's Republic (Hungarian Magyar Népköztársaság Állami Díja ) was created for this division, which was awarded until 1990. On January 25, 1990, the Hungarian Parliament decided that the Széchenyi Prize should be awarded in place of the former State Prize.

Award ceremony and award winners

The Széchenyi Prize is primarily awarded to individuals, but can also be awarded to groups and posthumously . The prize will be awarded by the President of the Republic of Hungary on the Hungarian national holiday , March 15th, in a ceremony together with the Kossuth Prize in the Parliament building in Budapest .

The Széchenyi Prize can also be awarded as the Grand Széchenyi Prize ( Széchenyi-nagydíj in Hungarian ) for special merits to individuals. So far, the Great Széchenyi Prize has been awarded five times: in 1995 to the historian and then President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences Domokos Kosáry , in 2008 to the mathematician László Lovász , in 2011 to the Nobel Prize winner for chemistry György Oláh , in 2012 to the physician Szilveszter Vizi and in 2014 to the historian John Lukacs .

The first time the prize was awarded on March 15, 1990, seven individuals and two group work were recognized and the prize was awarded posthumously to twelve people. The last award ceremony took place in 2017, when 13 individuals and one group achievement were honored with the award.
