history

Tøyen Hovedgård

The name Tøyen comes from the old Norse Taðvín ( tað - fertilizer, manure and vin - meadow) and initially referred to Tøyen Hovedgard , one of the former large farms in the area of today's Oslo and a former monastery. The main house from 1679 still exists today and is one of the oldest existing wooden buildings in Oslo. In 1805 the estate was acquired by Johan Lausen Bull , who was then President of the Magistrate in Christiania , now Oslo. In 1812 he had to give the court to the Norwegian-Danish King Friedrich VI for 170,000 Riksdaler . resell, who bequeathed it to the newly founded University of Oslo . Today the Natural History Museum with the University's Botanical Garden is located on the area around the main building.

From the 1870s, the university began selling parts of its land holdings. Brick apartment buildings were built on the site, which still define the cityscape today. Tøyen thus developed into a working-class district and one of the most densely populated parts of Oslo.
