The Oslo Botanical Garden ( Norwegian Botanisk hage ) in Tøyen near Oslo is Norway's oldest botanical garden , which was founded in 1814.

description

The garden and the collections have since been part of the Naturhistorisk Museum , which also includes the Geological Museum and the Zoological Museum . The Naturhistorisk Museum in turn belongs to the University of Oslo (UiO). The Botanical Garden has an area of 150 Maal with around 35,000 plants of 8,500 species from different parts of the world, the selection of which is constantly being expanded and restructured.

history

The garden area was now the botanical garden and used to belong to the manor Tøyen manor ( Norwegian Tøyen hovedgård ). Its last owner, President of the Magistrate, Johan Lausen Bull, sold his property to King Friedrich VI in 1812 . who left it in 1814 to the University of Oslo , which was newly founded in 1811 . The main building of the manor house and the main building of the current botanical garden is now also the oldest building of the University of Oslo. In 1814, the creation of a botanical garden began on an area of 150 times the former estate. The Danish-German botanist Johan Siebke , who worked in Copenhagen , was partly included in the planning from 1815, but horticulture was not completed until 1918. Botanical garden has doubled since its inception until today. The area is divided into various thematic areas and systematically divided into sections, such as cultivated plants, rock gardens and arboretum. The two greenhouses in the area, the palm house and the Victoria house are also part of the botanical garden.

The Botanical Museum in Oslo (founded in 1863) has been a unit with the Botanical Garden since 1975. Botanical Garden is up to the challenge and is intended to serve the purpose of imparting knowledge, such as conveying the richness of the flora and, above all, the importance of maintaining this biodiversity. Furthermore, plants from Norwegian nature that are protected or endangered are secured in the botanical garden.

In 1995 the botanical garden was awarded the Årets grønne park award (Green Park of the Year). The park is also a green lung for Norway's capital and an important local recreation area for the residents of Oslo.
