The Túnel Fernando Gómez Martínez (popularly known as Túnel de Occidente ) is a road tunnel between the Colombian cities of Medellín and San Jerónimo . It is the third largest and most modern tunnel structure in Latin America . It is 4.6 kilometers long and offers modern security technology and services for users. The tunnel was opened on January 20, 2006. The construction time was eight years.

At each end of the tunnel there is a control room that controls more than 50 television cameras and can operate around 800 lamps. 220 kilometers of electrical cables were installed. The tunnel has a ventilation and automatic sprinkler system that can draw the extinguishing water from the pipeline network and from tanks with a storage capacity of 142,000 liters. The control rooms can use the car radio frequency 106.9 MHz to provide users with information as they drive through and drive in. The average transit time is 5 to 6 minutes.
