The Túnel Sá Freire Alvim is a road tunnel in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro . It passes under the Morro do Cantagalo in the Copacabana district and connects Rua Barata Ribeiro with Rua Raul Pompéia. Its length is 326 meters.

The construction of the tunnel was planned in October 1953 under the mayor Dulcídio Cardoso . The drilling for the 18 meter wide tunnel was carried out by the company Palatinato Construções S / A. The opening took place in January 1960.

The tunnel is named after José Joaquim de Sá Freire Alvim , the last mayor of the then Federal District .
