Tōbata Seiichi ( Japanese 東 畑 精一 ; born February 2, 1899 in Ureshino (嬉 野) in Mie Prefecture ; died May 6, 1983 in Tōkyō ) was a Japanese agronomist.

Live and act

Tōbata Seiichirō graduated from the Faculty of Agriculture at Tōkyō University in 1922 . After graduating, he became an assistant professor at the Faculty of Agriculture at his alma mater in 1924. From 1926 to 1929 he continued his education abroad, in the USA and Germany. In Germany he studied under Schumpeter at the University of Bonn , where he met the economist Nakayama Ichirō (1898–1980), with whom he worked to translate many of Schumpeter's works.

Tōbata wrote many books before the Pacific War . The "development process of Japanese agriculture" (日本 農業 の 展開 過程, Nihon nōgyō tenkai katei) from 1936 was influenced by Schumpeter. As the first application of modern economic theory, the work opened up a new perspective on agricultural economics. Tōbata was from 1946 to 1956 director of the "Institute for General Agricultural Research" (農業 総 合 s, Nōgyō sōgō kenkyūjo), from 1960 to 1968 director of the "Research Institute for Asian Economics" (ア ジ ア 経 済 研究所, Ajia keizai kenkyūjo), after the end teaching at the University of Tōkyō Professor at the private University of Agriculture in Tokyo , and from 1965 to 1974 chairman of the "Tax Systems Study Group" (税制 調査 会, Zaisei chōsa-kai), which had a major impact on the Japanese economy. He became a member of the Academy of Sciences in 1964 .

In 1970 Tōbata was honored as a person with special cultural merits , in 1980 he was awarded the Order of Culture .
