Kaneko Tōta ( Japanese 金子 兜 太 ; born September 23, 1919 in Chichibu ; † February 20, 2018 in Kumagaya ) was a Japanese poet .

Kaneko studied at Tokyo University until 1943 and then worked for the Bank of Japan . He began to write poetry under the guidance of his father, Kaneko Mitsuharu . As a haiku poet, he is influenced by Katō Shūson , Takeshita Shizunojo and Nakamura Kusatao . After the war he was a leading exponent of modern haiku and introduced the metaphor into haiku poetry. In 1962 he founded the Kaitei haiku group . He published, starting with the anthology Shōnen , more than fifty volumes of poetry. In 2008 he was named one of the People of Special Cultural Meritrecorded and awarded the Kikuchi Kan Prize in 2010 . In 2015 he received the Asahi Prize .
