Coryphantha echinoidea is a species of plant in the genus Coryphantha from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet echinoidea is derived from the Greek words echinos for 'hedgehog' and -oides for 'similar' and refers to the prickly habitus of the species.

description

Coryphantha echinoidea grows individually. The spherical, opaque green shoots reach heights of growth with diameters of 5 to 6 centimeters. The loosely set warts , up to 10 millimeters high, are conical. Some of them are trimmed. Young axillae are not very woolly, later they are bare. The one to three reddish to brownish, awl, stiff central spines are straight or slightly bent downwards and 1.1 to 1.6 centimeters long. They are tipped darker. The 20 to 24 white to gray, darker-tipped radial spines are needle-like, bendable, straight to slightly bent downwards and are 1 to 1.4 centimeters long.

The pink to lemon yellow flowers reach a diameter of 3.5 to 5 centimeters. The broad, club-shaped fruits are opaque green and up to 1.5 centimeters long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Coryphantha echinoidea is widespread in the Mexican states of San Luis Potosí and possibly Durango on slopes with limestone gravel.

The first description as Mammillaria echinoidea by Leopold Quehl was published in 1913. Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose put the species in 1923 in the genus Coryphantha .

Coryphantha echinoidea is in the endangered Red List species the IUCN as " Least Concern (LC) ", d. H. not endangered, classified.
