The United Swiss Railways (VSB) procured for the Toggenburgerbahn (TB) in 1870 by the company Krauss in Munich three Tender steam locomotives of the type E 3/3 Swiss at a price of 40 000 francs.

From 1885 the machines were designated as Series V, from 1886 as Series III. From 1887 to 1902 they were called E3.

Technical

The drive with an inner frame, which was also designed as a water tank, was provided with three-point suspension. This was achieved in that the middle and rear axles had a common suspension spring on both sides in a support beam above the frame. The front axle was provided with a transverse spring.

The first boiler did not have a steam dome. It was 1,800 mm above the top of the rail and was equipped with a Klose safety valve. The second boiler, however, received a steam dome. The fire box was behind the rear axle. The two coal boxes were attached to the side of the fire box. The drive rod was coupled to the rearmost axle. The control of the external engine was an all control with lever operation. The piston rods were not passed forward. The sandboxes were mounted on the running plate. A device for steam heating was built in. The speed could be read on a Klose speedometer. There was no power brake, only a spindle brake (hand brake).

Operational

Because the Toggenburgerbahn was managed by the United Swiss Railways, the locomotives could also be found outside their main line. Larger maintenance work was usually carried out in the VSB workshop in Rorschach.

Locomotive 8396 served as a works locomotive in the SBB workshop in Chur from 1912 to 1929 . Machine No. 8397 was used in the SBB Romanshorn workshop from 1912 and in the Chur workshop from 1929 to 1931.
