TIOBE index

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
TIOBE index for the period 2002–2015: Java (blue) is overtaken by C (black) in popularity.

The TIOBE Programming Community Index is a monthly updated ranking of programming languages according to their popularity that has been published since 2001 .

The list position of each language results from the frequency of hits when searching for the name of the programming language in the most important websites with search functions according to Alexa Internet .

The ranking is published by the Dutch company TIOBE Software BV , which was founded in October 2000 with the financial support of the Swiss company SynSpace AG and some private investors.

criticism

The index as well as its method of formation are controversial. The ranking could be shifted by orders of magnitude with the choice of slightly different search terms and the search hits are not differentiated according to document type (e.g. single forum question from a beginner or a complex compendium that answers many questions), and only the first would be 100 hits are checked for plausibility and a correction factor is calculated for the entire search result. Tiobe Software admits that the massive breakdown of Java in 2004 was probably due to a cleansing of the Google search index of spam entries and that the method was "not scientific". On the other hand, it is recognized that this ranking is difficult due to the system.

The results of similar indices, such as the RedMonk Programming Language Index or the Popularity of Programming Language Index, differ considerably from the results of the TIOBE Index.

  1. ^ Robert McMillan: Is Java Losing Its Mojo? . wired.com . August 1, 2013 .: " Java is on the wane, at least according to one outfit that keeps on eye on the ever-changing world of computer programming languages. For more than a decade, it has dominated the Tiobe Programming Community Index - a snapshot of software developer enthusiasm that looks at things like internet search results to measure how much buzz different languages have. But lately, Java has been slipping. "
