Companies

TMD Friction is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Japanese conglomerate Nisshinbo Holdings Inc. The group of companies is one of the world's largest manufacturers with 1 million brake pads produced every day. TMD Friction is the world market leader in the field of original equipment for the automotive and brake industry, but also supplies the spare parts market . TMD Friction's core competencies are brake pads for passenger cars, racing cars and commercial vehicles. Here TMD Friction serves the market with the brands Textar, Pagid, Mintex, Don and Cobreq. TMD Friction also produces friction materials for industrial applications under the Cosid brand.

The group, managed by TMD Friction Holdings GmbH based in Leverkusen , has 13 production sites in twelve countries on four continents as well as research and development centers in Leverkusen, Troy (USA) and Salto (Brazil). Production takes place in four plants in Germany (Leverkusen, Essen, Hamm / Sieg , Coswig near Dresden ), five locations in other European countries and others in Brazil, Mexico and China. The group of companies achieved a turnover of 736 million euros in 2019. It employs more than 5,000 people worldwide.

In 2006 the company launched a comprehensive, global restructuring program under the name “Speed”. In the course of the global crisis, TMD Friction went bankrupt at the end of 2008. The takeover of TMD Friction by the TMD management team and the investor Pamplona Capital Management in 2009 ensured the continued existence of TMD Friction.

In the Far East, particularly in China , development capacities are being expanded. TMD Friction is also expanding its expertise in the fields of racing and high-performance. Since July 2010, three company acquisitions have also taken place. TMD Friction acquired the brake pad manufacturer Eurofriction Limited based in Kilmarnock , Scotland, the high-performance and racing experts bt Bremsen Technik based in Rosbach vor der Höhe , Germany and Cape Coral in the USA. In November 2015 bt Bremsen Technik GmbH was renamed TMD Performance GmbH and has been based in Essen since then . Most recently, Dynotherm, a South Africa- based manufacturer of brake pads for industrial applications, was acquired by TMD Friction.

On 26 September 2011, the shares of TMD Friction by the Japanese were Nisshinbo Holdings Inc. bought. TMD Friction is thus an independent, wholly-owned subsidiary of Nisshinbo Holdings after the transaction has been concluded.

In September 2014, the company announced that the Leverkusen production site would be integrated into the existing plant in Essen by the end of 2018. The company's entire car division in Germany will then be located in one location. [outdated]

In February 2016, TMD Friction sold the “rail-guided traffic” division to the Munich-based company Knorr-Bremse in order to concentrate more on its core business.
