TUM system

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The systematics of the Technical University of Munich (TUM systematics) is a library classification that is used by the library of the Technical University of Munich to list and subject their holdings to cataloging.

Characteristics

The TUM system covers all areas of science, but has a clear focus on technical and natural science subjects. The depth of access is rather low. The TUM system has existed since 1982, when the library of the Technical University of Munich decided to catalog all of the library's holdings in a uniform systematic catalog. The adoption of existing classifications such as the Regensburg network classification or the system of the TIB Hanover was rejected at that time.

construction

The TUM system consists of 52 main groups. Each main group can contain up to 999 system points. The main groups are designated mnemonically and each consist of three capital letters. The system positions within a main group are represented by a three-digit code (001-999). The third element of the notations in the TUM system consists of a lower case letter that forms the formal key.

Example of a notation: ERG 820f
