Hans Jakob Holzhalb (born November 21, 1720 in Zurich ; † April 4, 1807 there ) was a Swiss scholar .

Life

Hans Jakob Holzhalb was born on November 21, 1720 as the son of the pharmacist "zum Salmen" Leonhard Holzhalb in Zurich. From 1742 onwards Holzhalb ran his father's pharmacy, which he sold in 1782. Then he retired to the countryside in Brütten . Out of personal interest, he acquired historical knowledge, especially Swiss history and Swiss gender studies. As an extremely ambitious collector of historical material, Holzhalb added a six-volume “ supplement ” to Johann Jacob Leus' Swiss Lexicon from 1786 to 1795 . Hans Jakob Holzhalb, who presumably remained unmarried, died without offspring at the age of 86 in the municipal benefice house of St. Jakob.
