Joseph Walker Wear (born November 27, 1876 in St. Louis , Missouri , † June 4, 1941 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) was an American tennis player and official.

Career

Joseph Wear worked in the family's dry food business after graduating from Yale University in 1899. He later became an investment banker and broker in a Philadelphia firm.

At the Olympic Summer Games in 1904 in his hometown of St. Louis, Joseph Wear and his compatriot Allen West won the bronze medal in the men's tennis doubles , after they beat the later Olympic champions Alphonzo Bell and Robert LeRoy in three sets with 6: 2, 1: 6 in the semifinals and were defeated 2: 6. His younger brother Arthur also took third place with another partner. His greatest tennis success was five titles at the US Court Tennis Championships and three times winning the Racquet Doubles Championship .

From 1936 to 1941, Wear was Vice President of the United States Lawn Tennis Associacion (USLTA) and in 1935 Davis Cup captain. The Wear family also had a connection to golf . Joseph and Arthur's sister Lucretia was married to George Herbert Walker , founder of the Walker Cup .
