T Pyxidis ( T Pyx for short ) is a recurring nova 6,000 light years from Earth . In the years 1890, 1902, 1920, 1944 and 1966 there were outbursts of brightness down to 6.5 mag. On April 14, 2011, the beginning of a new outbreak was discovered.

The system is a binary star consisting of a white dwarf and a nearby stellar companion. Due to the proximity, material falls from the companion onto the surface of the white dwarf. If the nuclear focal point of hydrogen is reached as a result of the increasing pressure and temperature , there is a nova outbreak. The white dwarf itself remains undamaged and the material from the companion accumulates again on its surface, which then leads to another eruption after a few years.

The name part "T" follows the rules for naming variable stars and says that T Pyxidis is the third variable star that was discovered in the constellation Ship Compass (Latin Pyxis ).
