Taça Ioduran

The Taça Ioduran ( Idouran Cup ) was a Brazilian competition for soccer club teams from 1917 to 1919. It was intended to compare the performance of the national champions of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo .

Since the champions of São Paulo Club Athletico Paulistano did not compete in 1917 and 1919, there was only one game in the history of the competition in which Paulistano - on the square of Botafogo in Rio in front of 5000 spectators, as some sources report - the Fluminense FC 3-2 and felt like the Brazilian champions. America FC and Fluminense were declared winners without a fight in 1917 and 1919 .

The Taça Salutaris from 1911 can be seen as the predecessor competition . In 1914 a Taça dos Campeões Estaduais was held between top clubs from both countries. Under this and similar names there were further tournaments at more or less irregular intervals until 1986.

As a direct successor to Taça Ioduran, the Copa dos Campeões Estaduais , the “Cup of State Champions”, was played out in 1920 , in which the field of participants was expanded to include the national champions from Minas Gerais . In 1936 there was a new edition of this tournament, in which the field of participants was increased again. But as early as 1933, the Torneio Rio-São Paulo began to establish itself as a competition between the top clubs of the two states, which finally mutated into the Brazilian championship in the early 1970s .
