Taagepera ( German Wagenküll ) is a village ( küla ) in the Estonian district of Valga . It has 127 inhabitants (January 1, 2007). Taagepera administratively belongs to the rural municipality of Tõrva (until 2017 Helme ).

location

Taagepera is located on the upper reaches of the river Flusshne . The place was first mentioned in 1420 as Wafencul , later as Waagenkül. The current Estonian name of the place is derived from the Baltic German aristocratic Stackelberg family , who owned the property from 1674 to 1796. The Taagepera manor was probably founded before the Livonian War .

Wagenküll Castle

Taagepera is especially famous for its castle-like manor house in Art Nouveau style , which also contains numerous late romantic elements. The imposing mansion stands on a hill with a wide field of vision. It was built in 1907–1912 by the Riga architect Otto Wildau (1873–1942). With its 40 meter high tower, it is reminiscent of a medieval castle building . The asymmetry is strongly emphasized in the main building. In the weather vane on the tower, a crescent moon and drops of blood remind of the coat of arms of the von Stryk family .

There are 75 rooms in the castle, all of which have different wallpapers . They impress with their sometimes huge chimneys . The outbuildings such as the administrator's house from the end of the 18th century were also renovated.

The manor house was owned by the von Stry (c) k family from 1819 to 1919 before the Estonian state expropriated it . From 1922 a sanatorium for lung patients was housed in the manor house. Today the mansion is privately owned again and serves as a luxurious hotel and conference venue.
