Taavi Aas (born January 10, 1966 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian politician. From 2015 to 2019 he was Lord Mayor of his hometown. He has been Minister of Economy and Infrastructure of the Republic of Estonia since April 29, 2019. He belongs to the Estonian Center Party (Eesti Keskerakond) .

Life

Taavi Aas was born in Tallinn, the capital of the then Estonian SSR , in 1966 . After graduating from school, he attended the Estonian University of Environmental Sciences , where he graduated in 1991 with a degree in agriculture. He then worked in the private sector from 1993 to 2005.

politics

Taavi Aas has been a member of the Estonian Center Party since 2002 . In 2005 he became Deputy Mayor of Tallinn. As the successor to Edgar Savisaar , he was elected Lord Mayor of his hometown in 2017, after he had already taken over the post after Savisaar's impeachment in 2015.

In the parliamentary elections in 2019 Aas managed to win a seat in the Estonian parliament ( Riigikogu ). He then surprisingly renounced the office of Lord Mayor and instead accepted the mandate. When the new government was formed, he was appointed Minister of Economy and Infrastructure.

Private

Taavi Aas is married and has a father of three. In addition to Estonian, he also speaks English, Russian and Finnish.
