Tachyon: The Fringe is a space flight simulation from the American development studio Novalogic . It was released in 2000 for Windows .

action

Tachyon: The Fringe is set in the 26th century. Mankind has meanwhile expanded beyond the limits of the solar system with the help of Tachyon jump gates. While conditions in the home system are stable and orderly, various interest groups compete for power and influence on the fringes of the human sphere of influence. The main character and alter ego of the player, the space pilot Jake Logan, initially works as a mercenary for the company Advanced Ganymede Technologies in the Solsystem. But in a seemingly simple escort flight, the transporter turns out to be a flying bomb. Docked at the destination of the flight, a space base, the ship explodes and destroys the station. Jake is held responsible for this attack and banished to the border regions known as The Fringe , where he - robbed of all previous possessions and only equipped with a decrepit space fighter - has to build a new existence. As a contract mercenary, Logan can initially improve his account balance a little, but is soon faced with a decision. Two groups, the Galspan Corporation and the free colonists of the Bora, are vying for supremacy there. There are also other smaller factions such as the asteroid barons or the pirates. Jake must join one of the two factions and help them defeat the other side.

Gameplay

campaign

The game principle of Tachyon relies heavily on space battles in a first-person view , economic and trade aspects as in Elite have been excluded.

In the course of the game, the player controls various large space stations, where he is offered various missions, for which he receives money. The mission objectives consist of escort flights, combat missions or search and reconnaissance missions. For the money earned, the player can purchase better ships and ship equipment such as weapons or the like. He can also hire escort pilots to support him on his missions.

The game world consists of several sectors connected by Tachyon jump gates, which are unlocked during the course of the story. For this, Logan ultimately has to join one of the two main factions and fulfill their assignments as they advance the plot of the game. Free exploration of the game world outside of the missions is not provided.

Multiplayer

The multiplayer mode was designed primarily for online games with up to 120 players, but is also possible in the local network, but then allows a maximum of 32 participants. In addition to a classic death match for up to 64 players, referred to as Arena Match in the program itself, Novalogic developed a mode known as Base War. Two teams with up to 60 pilots have to expand their space base by collecting crystals and in return destroy the opposing station. The station expansion enables the purchase of upgrades, the necessary credits for this are earned by killing opponents. If a base reaches technology level 10, it can be destroyed by the opposing team. The play area extends over several areas connected by jump gates.

development

Tachyon uses a further developed engine variant of the flight simulators F-22 Lightning 3 and F-22 Lightning 2, also from Novalogic . The game concept came from Randy Casey, who also acted as lead programmer. The player's alter ego was set to music by actor Bruce Campbell ( Army of Darkness ).

reception

Tachyon received mostly positive reviews.
