The Tajikistan – Afghanistan Bridge is a road bridge over the Pandsch , one of the headwaters of the Amur Darya , which connects the village of Pandschi Pojon in Tajikistan with the village of Shir Khan Bandar in Afghanistan .

The two-lane bridge is 673 m long, 11 m wide and has twelve openings. Its superstructure consists of steel solid wall girders that were pushed over the eleven concrete pillars using the incremental launching method .

The construction of the bridge was agreed in an agreement between the USA and Tajikistan from late 2003 / early 2004. It was built between March 2004 and mid-2007 by the US Army Corps of Engineers and an Italian construction company. The opening ceremony was held on August 26, 2007 by Hamid Karzai , President of Afghanistan, Emomalij Rahmon , President of Tajikistan, and Carlos Gutierrez , Secretary of Commerce of the United States .

The bridge was funded by the US for US $ 37.1 million and by Norway for US $ 0.9 million. The Tajik road connection to Dusti on the A 385 was financed and expanded by Japanese companies, the Afghan road connection to Kunduz was financed by the Asian Development Bank.

The bridge created an uninterrupted road connection between the Tajik capital Dushanbe via Kunduz and Kabul , which is expected to expand trade and the economy. Critics, on the other hand, fear the export of drugs and unrest from Afghanistan.

The closest bridge is the Afghanistan-Uzbekistan Friendship Bridge , which is 100 km as the crow flies downstream, but 230 km via Tajik and Uzbek roads or 262 km via Afghan roads.
