Tafo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tafo (also: Old Tafo ) is a place in Ghana . Due to the population and settlement development in recent years, it is controversial whether Tafo should still be regarded as a separate city or whether it is already a district of Kumasi , the capital of the Ashanti region . Another village near Kumasi (or a district) with a distance of approx. 3.3 kilometers to the center of Tafo is called New Tafo and is to be distinguished from Tafo. Tarkwa is only about 4.6 kilometers from Tafo. The city center of Kumasi is about 9.8 kilometers away, but there is no obvious city limit to Tafo.

Due to its history, Tafo is the seat of a regional Ashanti king, the Tafohene. An important cocoa research institute was opened in Tafo in June 1938 with 1000 employees. There are now only around 200 employees who mainly carry out research and monitoring activities in the area of cocoa cultivation. The biological control of African locusts with specific pathogens is also tested and developed on test fields and in the laboratory.

In the census of March 18, 1983, 25,688 were counted in Tafo. An extrapolation for January 2007 indicated a population of 53,165. Tafo is therefore ranked 23rd on the list of the most populous cities in Ghana. With the Tafo Hospital, an important hospital is located in Tafo, which plays a major role in the health care of the local population.

In Kumasi and Tafo, the lowest temperature in Ghana has been measured to date at 12 ° C. In Tafo or Old Tafo, one of the urban constituencies of Kumasi is located, each of which sends a direct candidate to parliament.
