The Day of the Regions is a nationwide project of the Federal Association of Regional Movement eV , which organizes events on the topic of sustainable regional development within an annual campaign period. In 2019, the Day of the Regions celebrates its 20th anniversary.

The idea

Within a two-week campaign period, events with regional relevance are organized nationwide via the network of the Day of the Regions, including in the areas of agriculture, handicrafts, culture, nature and environmental protection, gastronomy and tourism. External organizers have the opportunity to enter their planned campaigns in the network of the Day of the Regions and to use its advertising opportunities. The self-declared aim of the Day of the Regions is to generate more awareness for the social and economic importance of regions through the events in the public and in politics and thereby to strengthen regional economic cycles.

history

The Day of the Regions was launched in 1999 by the regional initiative Species-Rich Land - Livable City eV (Feuchtwangen / Middle Franconia) and the Citizens' Initiative Livable Bördeland and Diemeltal eV (Borgentreich / East Westphalia). The initiators were currently the chairmen of the two associations Heiner Sindel (innkeeper and today 1st chairman of the Federal Association of Regional Movement eV from Feuchtwangen) and Sven Mindermann (today deputy chairman of the Federal Association of Regional Movement eV) performed around Thanksgiving Sunday. In the same year, a nationwide action alliance Day of the Regions was founded at an official ceremony in Berlin, to which 40 organizations and associations from agriculture, the church as well as environmental and nature protection belong, including BUND , NABU , WWF , consumer center and Bread for the World . On the basis of the action alliance Day of the Regions, the Federal Association of Regional Movement eV was founded in 2005 , which today acts as an umbrella organization nationwide as a representation of interests for regional initiatives as well as micro, small and medium-sized companies. In 2018, the Day of the Regions celebrated its 20th edition under the motto “Because home is alive”. In 2019, the Day of the Regions celebrates its 20th anniversary.

Influence and effect

With over 20,000 events in 20 years and around 20 million visitors, the Day of the Regions has already given significant impetus for sustainable regional development. According to the company, the events in many regions made a significant contribution to the fact that the opportunities of regionalization were recognized in the first place and that numerous other projects to promote regional economic cycles were created.
