The Tolkien Reading Day (translated: Day of Tolkien reading ) is an unofficial holiday that since 2003 every year on March 25 is celebrated. On this day the works of the British author JRR Tolkien are to be read.

history

The Tolkien Reading Day was launched in 2003 by the British Tolkien Society , which sees itself on the one hand as a literary society and on the other as an official fan club.

The actual initiative went back to the American journalist Sean Kirst, who wrote as a columnist for the Post Standard based in Syracuse , New York , and wrote to the Tolkien Society in January 2002 with reference to Bloomsday and asked for a corresponding one Tolkien Day.

“My grandparents were fishing folk from Buckie in the north of Scotland, carriers of the old stories and legends, and the trilogy has filled a certain hole in my life. I have many friends here in New York who were equally moved by the book, reignited by the film, and we all wondered: is there any day devoted informally to readings from the trilogy, in the way that “Bloomsday” is devoted to Joyce? ”

The Tolkien Society accepted the proposal and, since 2003, proclaimed March 25th as the official Tolkien Reading Day . The choice of date goes back to the Lord of the Rings trilogy . Converted to the Gregorian calendar , the dark ruler Sauron was defeated on March 25th by destroying the One Ring .

solemnity

"The aim of this special day of Tolkien reading is to invite the public to read the works of the British author JRR Tolkien (1882 - 1973) and, above all, to bring young readers closer to the effects of this fantastic world and of literature in general."

Kirst has been entrusting the Tolkien Society with local Tolkien Reading Day events in the United States since 2008 .
