Tagès is a CD / DVD copy protection that is mainly used in the games industry.
A special feature of Tagès is that the protection can release certain parts of the protected application, so that this program still functions partially in a restricted way.
Media protected with Tagès contain so-called TWIN sectors. This means that these sectors are contained twice on the CD / DVD, but in truth it is not a duplicate, but a sector that differs in content and only has the same number. Since each sector is read only once when reading the CD / DVD, only the first of the double sectors is read in the respective reading direction, the second is considered to be identical and is skipped. During the copy protection check, these sectors are now read specifically once in the normal reading direction and once backwards, which results in a deviation on the original CD / DVD, since when reading in the opposite direction, the only apparently identical sector duplicate is read. When making a copy, the source CD / DVD is read in one direction only, which is why the sector is identical in both reading directions.
Tagès is usually installed with the installation of the protected software without the knowledge of the user and then performs its services in the background. Similar to the SecuROM and StarForce copy protection procedures , which install hidden services, Tagès can lead to complications with other drivers or peripheral devices, which can lead to system instability or even prevent legitimate software from working correctly.
Another special feature is that the services can be easily installed or removed using an officially provided program without having to restart the system. This enables the user to decide for himself whether he would like to use these services or not.
