The Taihangshan ( Chinese 太行山 , Pinyin Tàiháng Shān ), or the Taihang Mountains are a mountain range in the northern Chinese provinces of Shanxi and Hebei .
The mountains extend from the valley of the Juma He River (拒马河) of the Hebei or Haihe lowlands (i.e. from the Beijing district of Fangshan ) in the northeast to the Shanxi plateau in the southwest. Most of the mountains are between 1500 and 2000 meters high. The main peak Xiaowutai (小 五台山, ⊙ ) has a height of 2882 m .
The area is rich in coal .
The provinces Shanxi ("west of the mountains") and Shandong ("east of the mountains") have received their names from their location west and east of the Taihang Shan .
The mountains are crossed by the Taihangshan Tunnel , which opened in 2009 and , with a length of 27.8 kilometers, is one of the longest rail tunnels in China.
