Taikyoku Shodan (from Japanese "Taikyoku", German "universal kata", "preparatory kata" and Japanese "Shodan", German "first level") is a beginners kata in karate , which mainly consists of two techniques: Gedan Barai (defense down) and Oizuki (equal punch).

This kata was developed as a simplification from the Kata Heian Shodan . It is usually taught as the first kata in the styles in which it is widespread and serves to introduce the student to the essence of the kata. It is the first kata in the Taikyoku series. It is usually a central component of the yellow belt test.
