Takakusu Junjirō

Takakusu Junjirō ( Japanese 高 楠 順 次郎 ; born June 29, 1866 in Kagari , Mitsugi-gun (today: Mihara ), Hiroshima Prefecture ; died June 28, 1945 ), who often published under the prenonym J. Takakusu , was a Japanese Buddhologist .

Live and act

Takakusu Junjirō graduated from Ryūkoku University. In 1890 he went to England and studied Indian religion and philosophy as well as Sanskrit under the German scholar Friedrich Max Müller . Back in Tōkyō, he taught Sanskrit literature at the Imperial University of Tokyo . He gathered around himself a group of Buddhist scholars and devoted all his strength and resources to the publication of a series of translations of Buddhist literature and original Indian documents.

Takakusu was director of the Tokyo Foreign Language School (now Tokyo Foreign Language University ) and Rector of Tōyō University .

In 1944 Takaksu was awarded the Order of Culture .
