Toshiyuki Takano

Toshiyuki Takano ( Japanese 高 野 紀元 , Takano Toshiyuki ; * 1944 in Japan ) is a Japanese diplomat . From 2005 to 2008 he was the extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador of Japan to the Federal Republic of Germany . Takahiro Shin'yo has held this office since 2008 .

biography

Takano graduated from Tokyo University . In 1967 he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan and has since served in various positions in the Foreign Service . In 2001 he was appointed junior minister in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ( gaimu-shingikan , position below the state secretaries ) for political affairs ( seimu tantō ). In the course of his work as ambassador, it took him to Singapore , South Korea and Germany. He then worked as a consultant to the Nikkei company Itōchū .

controversy

In February 2005, Takano sparked controversy by publicly announcing that the Liancourt Rocks in the Sea of Japan "historically and legally" belong to Japan, even though they are under South Korean administration. Both countries raise territorial claims to this group of islands to this day.
