The joint stock company Tallinna Linnatranspordi As is the municipal transport company of the Estonian capital Tallinn . It operates the Tallinn tram , the Tallinn trolleybus and the urban omnibus traffic. history

The history of Tallinn's omnibus transport began in 1922 when entrepreneur Fromhold Kangro received approval from the city government to set up five lines. First, some old stood for double-decker buses of the type Daimler available. Due to the high indebtedness of the company, it was converted into a limited liability company (OU) in 1926. On January 26, 1926, the new OÜ Mootor Betrieb began operations and gradually took over the operation of all urban bus routes.

The OÜ Mootor company remained until the end of the Second World War . In 1945 she was also assigned the freight transport. On December 8, 1945, under the new Soviet government, Tallinna Autobussikoondis AS was founded as a state bus company in Tallinn. In 1993 the state-owned company was converted into a joint-stock company and became the property of the City of Tallinn. Since this year she has been a member of the International Public Transport Association UITP, and since 2004 a full member of the UITP Committee of the European Union.

Introduction of free transportation for residents

The city of Tallinn's decision to be the first European capital to offer free transport on its lines caused an international stir. As a result of a public survey in spring 2012 with over 75 percent approval, the city council decided on a corresponding concept that came into force on January 1, 2013 with the introduction of electronic plastic cards ( smart cards ). Such a chip card is available free of charge to all residents of Tallinn, the validity of which is checked on readers in the means of transport. Foreign passengers and tourists, on the other hand, still have to purchase a ticket or a SmartCard, whereby the journey is discounted when using the SmartCard. The aim was to increase the mobility of poor families and at the same time to encourage more people to switch from cars to public transport. For this purpose, additional bus lanes were set up and traffic lights were changed in favor of buses and trains. In the first month, 15 percent fewer cars were on the road than in the two previous months, while buses and trains carried six percent more passengers in the same time.
