The Óbidos dam ( Portuguese Barragem de Óbidos or Barragem do Arnóia ) is located in the central region of Portugal in the Leiria district . It dams the Arnóia to a reservoir. The eponymous small town Óbidos is located about one kilometer west of the dam.
The project to build the dam started in 1997. The construction was completed in 2005. The dam is used for irrigation. It is owned by IDRHA or DGADR .
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is a dam with a height of 24 m above the foundation level (21 m above the river bed). The top of the wall is at a height of 34.5 m above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 160 m and its width 7 m. The volume of the dam is 157,000 m³.
The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 2.74 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 494 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 510 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring was determined to be once in 1,000 (or 5,000) years.
Reservoir
With a normal storage target of 32.5 m (maximum 33.6 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 1.01 km² and holds 7.1 million m³ of water - of which 5.8 million m³ can be used . The minimum congestion destination is 22 m.
