The Alijó dam ( Portuguese Barragem de Alijó or Barragem de Vila Chã ) is located in the northern region of Portugal in the Vila Real district . It dams the Chã , a right (northern) tributary of the Douro, to a reservoir (port. Albufeira da Barragem de Vila Chã ). The municipality of Vila Chã is about 1.5 km north of the dam, the small town of Alijó about 3 km southeast.

The project to build the dam began in 1985. The construction was completed in 1991. The dam is used to supply drinking water. It is owned by INAG .

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a dam with a height of 40 m above the foundation level (36 m above the river bed). The crest of the dam is at a height of 660.9 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 167 m and its width 6 m. The volume of the dam is 352,400 m³.

The dam has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 2.5 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 52 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 72 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once in 1,000 years.

Reservoir

With the normal storage target of 658.5 m (maximum 659.9 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 0.18 km² and holds 1.74 million m³ of water - of which 1.59 million m³ can be used . The minimum congestion destination is 640 m.
