The Arcossó dam ( Portuguese Barragem de Arcossó ) is located in the northern region of Portugal in the Vila Real district . It dams the Arcossó , a left (eastern) tributary of the Tâmega, to a reservoir. The municipality of Vila Verde da Raia is about three kilometers northwest of the dam, the town of Chaves about eight kilometers southwest.

The project to build the dam began in 1991. The construction was completed in 1999. The dam is used to supply drinking water. It is owned by the Associação de Regantes da Veiga de Chaves .

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a CFR dam with a height of 40 m above the foundation level . The top of the dam is at a height of 540 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 315 m and its width 8 m. The volume of the dam is 386,620 m³.

The dam has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 4.9 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 85 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 113 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once in 1,000 years.

Reservoir

With the normal storage target of 537 m (maximum 538.25 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 0.412 km² and holds 4.876 million m³ of water.
