The Burga dam ( Portuguese Barragem da Burga ) is located in the northern region of Portugal in the Bragança district . It dams the Burga , a right (northern) tributary of the Sabor, to form a reservoir. The small town of Alfândega da Fé is about six kilometers southeast of the dam.
The project to build the dam began in 1972. The construction was completed in 1978. The dam is used for irrigation. It is owned by DRATM .
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is a dam with a height of 35 m above the foundation level (28 m above the river bed). The top of the dam is at a height of 331.5 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 353 (or 300) m and its width 8 m. The volume of the dam is 436,000 m³.
The dam has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 13.4 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 130 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 190 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once in 500 years.
Reservoir
With a normal storage target of 329 m (maximum 330.5 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 0.161 km² and holds 1.539 million m³ of water - of which 1.383 million m³ can be used. The minimum congestion target is 307 m.
