The Fonte Serne dam ( Portuguese Barragem de Fonte Serne ) is located in the Alentejo region of Portugal in the Setúbal district . It dams the Vale Diogo , a left (western) tributary of the Sado to a reservoir (port. Albufeira da Barragem de Fonte Serne ). The small town of Alvalade is about seven kilometers northeast of the dam.
The project to build the dam began in 1973. The construction was completed in 1976. The dam is used for irrigation. It is owned by the Associação de Regantes e Beneficiários de Campilhas e Alto Sado .
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is a dam with a height of 17.5 m above the foundation level (16 m above the river bed). The top of the dam is at a height of 81 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 324 m and its width 7 m. The volume of the dam is 152,400 m³.
The dam has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 6.8 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 36 (or 52) m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 100 (or 145) m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring was determined to be once in 500 (or 5,000) years.
Reservoir
With the normal storage target of 78.5 m (maximum 79.55 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 1.05 km² and holds 5.15 million m³ of water - of which 3.65 million m³ can be used . The minimum stowage destination is 74.3 m.
